Generator Source Ships Load-Tested Standby Generators In Days As New Equipment Lead Times Push Into 2027

BRIGHTON, CO, UNITED STATES, August 12, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Generator Source is shipping load-tested standby generators within hours to days from one of its four nationwide facilities offering an alternative to new-equipment lead times that now stretch past a year.

The timing gap has become the central procurement problem in backup power. U.S. data center equipment lead times have stretched to roughly 42+ weeks on average, well above pre-2020 norms, and major OEMs are booking production slots into 2027 and 2028. Orders placed now miss most near-term commercial operation dates.

Demand is what closed the gap. Diesel generator capacity at U.S. data centers nearly tripled in five years, from 20 gigawatts in 2018 to 55 gigawatts in 2024, and utilities in several markets are now quoting developers three to seven years for new grid interconnection. Backup power has moved onto the critical path alongside transformers and switchgear.

Every unit the company sells is load bank tested before it ships. Units are connected to load banks and run through a staged load profile, with technicians logging voltage, frequency, amperage, kilowatts, oil pressure, coolant temperature and fuel pressure throughout. Results are documented and provided to the buyer.

The distinction matters because starting a generator and loading one are different tests. Units that run at idle or light load never reach proper operating temperature, leaving unburned fuel and carbon deposits in the exhaust system, a condition known as wet stacking. A staged load test both surfaces the problem and helps correct it.

“Everyone in this market is talking about lead times right now,” said Eddie Vecchiarelli, CEO at Generator Source. “What gets talked about less is that buying used to beat a lead time only works if the unit actually performs. Speed without a load test is just a faster way to buy a problem.”

Secondary-market equipment also sidesteps a constraint that new orders increasingly face. Air permitting has moved to the front of project planning in several states, and equipment already built to an existing emissions tier can simplify a permitting path that new procurement complicates.

Generator Source also performs field load bank testing for customers operating their own equipment. NFPA 110 requires a monthly 30-minute exercise at no less than 30 percent of nameplate kW, and diesel units that cannot reach that threshold on building load owe a supplemental load bank test annually, a requirement most standby generators on light building loads trigger.

The 2025 edition of NFPA 110 revised that annual profile, eliminating the 25 percent step in favor of 50 percent of nameplate for 30 minutes followed by 75 percent for one hour. Because many jurisdictions have not yet adopted the 2025 edition, requirements currently vary by authority having jurisdiction. Generator Source tests to either profile.
